Consultancy service for a hydrological and geo-hydrological study

| The Zambia Environmental Management Agency invites eligible local/national Consultant teams to indicate their interest in providing for the following: Consultancy service for a hydrological and geo-hydrological study of the source of the Zambezi River and its related riparian Environment, Mwinilunga District.
The Interim Environment Fund (IEF) through the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has received funds from Cooperating Partners for consultancy towards the cost of engaging a Consultant to do a hydrological and geo-hydrological study of the source of the Zambezi river and its related riparian environment in Mwinilunga District and intends to apply a portion of this fund to eligible payments under the Contract.
Consequently, this consultancy arises from the lack of a geohydrological study of the area to enable understanding of the flow regimes and impacts of anthropogenic activities.
This identified need extends to the surface where the current hydrological status of the Zambezi headwaters and the potential key hydrological and geo-hydrological impacts that may arise due to the proposed development need to be assessed.
Therefore, the consultant will be required to provide a comprehensive report presenting the hydrological and geo-hydrological status of the Source and viable recommendations for its sound management and on the sources of potable water for the envisaged ecotourism facilities complete with various mitigations based on solid conservation practice.
Objective of the Invitation for Expression of Interest:
The objective of the request for Expression of Interest (EoI) is to identify a team of Consultants with sufficient technical and professional capacity to undertake the consultancy.
Scope of work:
In order to meet the above objectives the consultant will be expected to undertake the following tasks:
• Conducting a professional and detailed assessment of the current (and historical) hydrological and hydro-geological status and integrity of the Zambezi River Source in order to protect the site from environmental degradation;
• To identify key issues in the current natural hydrological system at the site and the prevailing water yields and quality from the spring(s);
• To undertake a survey of the physical integrity of the riparian section of the Zambezi Source and its surrounding ecosystem (the gazetted protected area);
• To undertake an assessment of the water yields of the Zambezi Source Spring and Catchment for a period of one full hydrological cycle;
• To design a groundwater monitoring network for the spring(s)/site;
• To establish the extent of infrastructure! works required to provide an effective and sustainable water supply and reticulation system at the site in view of the existing and proposed developments; and
To design the necessary infrastructure for resource protection as the need may arise and develop recommendations on how to protect the Zambezi Source and its surrounding riparian ecosystem.
Key Competences of the Consultants:
• Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, and Civil/Water Engineering, GIS and Remote Sensing;
• Water resources protection and management; and
• Water Infrastructure design, planning and construction.
• Computer literacy and modeling;
• Strong analytical skills;
• Strong interpersonal skills and report writing.
